If you're new to beading, seed bead sizing can feel backwards — the bigger the number, the smaller the bead. Here's a quick guide to help you choose the right size for your project.
How seed bead sizing works
Seed bead sizes are measured in "aught" (written as /0). The number refers to how many beads fit in a linear inch — so an 11/0 bead is smaller than a 6/0 bead. It's counterintuitive at first, but you'll get used to it quickly!
The most common sizes
- 6/0 (~3.7mm) — Large, easy to handle, great for beginners and chunky designs. Popular for bracelets and kids' projects.
- 8/0 (~3mm) — A versatile mid-size bead. Works well for peyote, brick stitch, and stringing.
- 11/0 (~2.2mm) — The most popular size. Fine enough for detailed beadwork, still easy to thread. The workhorse of seed beading.
- 15/0 (~1.5mm) — Tiny and precise. Used for fine detail work, edging, and adding texture in advanced patterns.
Which size should you start with?
If you're just getting started, 11/0 is the best all-around choice — it's what most patterns are written for and what you'll find the widest color selection in. Once you're comfortable, try mixing sizes for texture and dimension.
